LIBERIAN PRESIDENT SAYS ADDITIONAL HELP IS NEEDEDFocusing on what has been accomplished in the 10 months since she took office but acknowledging that her country has a long way to go, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf told a crowd of more than 700 at Marquette University on Monday, Oct. 26, 2006 that her African nation needs additional assistance to "build a new Liberia from the ashes of an old and turbulent past to a future of hope and promise." Also, Provost Madeline Wake announced at the event that the university would grant a four-year, full-tuition scholarship beginning in fall 2007 to a Liberian woman of the president’s choosing.
The Père Marquette Discovery Award is Marquette University's highest honor. In the spirit of the discoveries of Père Jacques Marquette, the award honors those who achieve an extraordinary breakthrough that adds to human knowledge or the advancement of humanity.
Marquette University confers a limited number of honorary degrees annually, usually in conjunction with Commencement each May.
The Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence recognize faculty who inspire students to seek the ideals of the university and cause them to grow in knowledge and scholarship for the glory of God and the good of others.
Marquette hosts a number of major speakers on campus. Recent speakers include award-winning actor, director and producer Martin Sheen and Nobel laureate and former president of Poland Lech Walesa.
